This was quite a weighty discussion! We certainly can not understand how a mother could propose such an idea, but then again, our circumstances have not forced us to entertain such options. In the U.S. during the Depression and also during war time, children were given away when parents couldn’t care for them. In China, babies are dropped off at orphanages. It will be interesting to see how often this question is posed to you over the months you are in your village.

Great post – I do think she wanted only the best for her baby…It would take an enormous heart filled with love to let some one take your baby so that they might have a better life in another country – I cannot imagine being able to ask some one to do that, because I cannot imagine what her life circumstances are. You are living with these wonderful people and right now seeing the world as an 18 year old. When you some day become a mother, her question will take on an entirely new and powerful meaning 🙂
