I had a similar experience last year in Ecuador where people made assumptions about me too. In Ecuador though, the difference is that there are more Chinese than Japanese or Koreans so Ecuadorians called me “Chino”, even though I’m half Japanese, half Mexican American. I too was frustrated (more especially when tourists from US didn’t believe I was American at first), but I learned that coming at it with humor often helps.
When I look back at it, I see a lot of these incidents as silly stories to tell back home, or more importantly, as teachable moments for me to not make assumptions about others too. Thanks for sharing this story! I think this is an issue that should be discussed more often.
