“Brasil” is the Brazillian spelling. In Portuguese and Brazillian Portuguese (Brazil was colonised by the Portuguese) the pronunciation of ‘S’s is phonetically closer to ‘Z’ when compared to English pronunciation, hence why we spell it with a ‘Z’ rather than with the original ‘S’. When spoken in either language it sound roughly the same. Abigail.. go read a book or two.

And so true, after living in Brasil for many years one really can feel the country teetering in between these two realities.

For the record..
Brasil is absolutely spelled with a “s”.. ask any Brasileiro.
Brazil with a “z” is the English / Americano spelling.
