Our daughter has just landed at Pre-Departure Training in the redwoods, en route to Brazil. We had thought we’d visit her, then heard that many families don’t do so, and resigned to not see her for eight months. Your report makes me think again. Visiting in-country is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to share this experience with your child, and just that small window into the world they are learning to inhabit can enrich conversations for years to come. Of course, we will take our cue from our daughter! This is her adventure, her journey. I’m grateful already for the opportunity she’s been given.

I did not expect to have the experience of my life! Global Citizen has changed my daughter in so many amazing ways and has also changed me.

We are with our daughter, Yani, in Ecuador and have appreciated similar attributes.
Yani’s experience has been full and rewarding as well. She is working in 2 jobs, a daycare for children, infants to age 4,and with mothers and their children educating them about child development and parenting through a gov-funded program. This was not something she initially believed she would be comfortable doing or “good at,” but watching her engage the staff and the children, she appears at ease and to have adapted. She specifically commented that she was enjoying her experience, especially seeing the infants grow into toddlers. She spent her first month in Quito and then moved to a remote area (a few blocks in size) called La Sexta in the cloud forest and not on any maps we could find (an hour from her “hub” in Puerto Quito (on maps) where fellows meet for ongoing language classes.

Her families have been lovely. Yani has navigated changes, work and travel incredibly well, sharing her knowledge of the people, their culture and customs. Her Spanish skills have grown allowing her to guide us during our travels as we speak little Spanish. Yani’s confidence and maturity is palpable.

We also had the good fortune of meeting various family members ( immediate and extended) in La Sexta as well as her very sweet Zumba teacher while in Puerto Quito.
Yani, her experiences, and the GCY staff have taught me so much about people, life and adolescents. I know I will take this knowledge back to my home and my work as a physician and educator.

GCY has provided a unique opportunity for our daughter that is unparalleled in any college experience either my husband or I ever had. I only wish this had been available to us. I am so glad GCY is available to so many kids and will reach out to even more in the future.
