Thank you Colin. I really appreciate that. It definitely has been tricky figuring out how to think about my role here. Just having the opportunity to live here for seven months shows the level of privilege I come from.
Thinking about how this GCY tuition money might be better spent investing in the development of Ecuadorian communities makes me question if my own growth is reason to justify being here. Whatever the case may be, I recognize that I am here now. Just because I have the fortune to be here while others don’t have similar opportunities doesn’t mean I shouldn’t make the most of the second half of this journey, no matter how guilty I might feel. Thanks for the kind words broski. I hope UCLA is treating you well, and I can’t wait until we’re kicking it back home 😉

This post was awesome and really insightful. I wholeheartedly agree that the more you learn about the world, the more you start to see how much you don’t know. The good thing is, I don’t think this has dissuaded you from continuing to be curious, learning from your host family and all the Ecuadorians you encounter. I think there is no better time for self-improvement and expanding your worldview than when you are exposed to a completely new culture. And I wouldn’t call that selfish. I think it’s introspective. I think you are on the road to wisdom my friend. You are one of the most selfless people I know. Taking the time to look inwards is important. You can’t help the people around you if you can’t help yourself. No doubt, you are making a positive impact wherever you go. -Colin
