This definitely helped me rethink the trash situation here in the Amazon.

There’s trash in the river, around the river, and where a river once was. I’m getting used to litter around here as well. Following my host dad’s lead, I throw banana peels and spit orange seeds onto the dusty brick roads.

My Ecuadorian family simply throws out the trash into a ravine behind the house, because there is no trash pick-up service outside the limits of the nearby town. Compared with how much trash comes weekly from my house in the U.S., however, the impact on the environment here is much less–in every way. Everyone also takes the bus or walks, houses use much less energy…the list goes on.
I hope things are going wonderfully in Senegal; it sounds like you are having a great experience there. Much love and many hugs from Ecuador!
