Foundations course to get ready
The Foundations course will prepare you to show up in South Africa with self-awareness, humility, and a learning mindset. During the 4 weeks before your departure, you’ll connect online to learn about personal development, community development, and the historical and social context in South Africa. Start bonding with your global cohort as the excitement builds for the adventure ahead!

Living together with your cohort
Our team will meet you at the airport and welcome you to your new home. You’ll get to live in a house together with several students coming from countries all over the world. Each student has a private bedroom and there are plenty of communal spaces for hanging out together. Our team will help everyone settle in with a series of orientation sessions during your first week.

Apprenticeships at human rights organizations
You’ll be thoughtfully matched with a South African organization advancing human rights, and will work with them 4-5 days a week. Get experience making an impact on the social issues most important to you – from food security to girls’ empowerment. Support their mission and deepen your awareness by working on the ground with experienced human rights leaders and the communities they serve.

Cultural immersion & ongoing training
Daily life in Cape Town provides ample opportunities to immerse in the local community and culture. Plus, every week the Global Citizen Year team hosts cultural activities or excursions for your cohort. Whether exploring the local cuisine, natural environment, history, or cultural traditions, each session provides an experiential opportunity to deepen your understanding of South Africa and all its complexities.
